Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton is an American politician, lawyer, and diplomat. She served as Secretary of State in the administration of Barack Obama from 2009 to 2013. She was previously a senator for New York from 2001 to 2009. She held the role of First Lady of the United States when her husband, Bill Clinton, was the 42nd president of the United States from 1993 to 2001. In the 2016 United States presidential election, Clinton was chosen as the Democratic Party nominee, becoming the first woman to win a presidential nomination by a major American political party. She ran against Donald Trump, the Republican Party nominee, against whom she won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College, becoming the only woman to win the popular vote for president. Clinton is the only American first lady to run for elected office.
