Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) says Republicans should “nuke” the Senate’s filibuster rule if Democrats continue to block Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding after the third assassination attempt against President Trump, citing “a moment of national danger.” Johnson acknowledged in an interview with Maria Bartiromo on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that Republicans would want to have the filibuster to “block awful socialist, leftist legislation” if Democrats regain control of power. But he argued “the Senate’s already broken enough” and that, in light of another assassination attempt against Trump and the “national danger” posed by the ongoing military conflict with Iran, it’s time for Republicans to “rip the Band-Aid off” and eliminate the filibuster. “The Democrats will do it when they get the majority. At a moment of national danger, if Democrats refuse to fund DHS, I would say this would be the time to nuke the filibuster for good,” Johnson said. Johnson had previously endorsed scrapping the filibuster to pass the SAVE America Act, Trump’s No. 1 legislative priority, which would require people registering to vote to show documented proof of citizenship and require voters to show identification to prove their identities before voting by mail or in person. …
